In the Tagus region there are three distinct wine regions: the Bairro, Charneca and Campo (Wetland Tagus).

CAMPO - Also known as Wetland Tagus this area of rolling plains, has highly fertile alluvial soils due to periodic flooding which is subject. It is essentially a region of white wines and the main grapes are Arinto, Fernão Pires and Verdelho.

BAIRRO - It situated between the Tagus Valley and the area of Porto de Mos, Candeeiros and Montejunto. The clay-limestone soils of this area are great for highlighting red varieties Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira and Cabernet Sauvignon and Touriga Nacional

CHARNECA - This area, located on the left bank of the Tagus River, is sandy and infertile soils. Despite the poor production that arises from geographical features mentioned, they focus more on the creation of white and red wines of the region.

The main red grape varieties are Castellan, Trincadeira, Touriga Nacional and Aragonez. The white grape varieties more commonly used are Fernão Pires, Arinto, Chardonnay Sauvignon.

The diversity of soils and weather conditions, combined with large wine farms and low production costs are the principal features of the Ribatejo.

In the regional production of Ribatejo wines are used grape varieties usually not permitted in the designation of origin, a fact that gives a greater freedom to make experiments with the soil and the grapes, resulting in a production of original wines.

Ribatejo used to be known for producing huge quantities of wine that was sold mainly in restaurants and taverns in Lisbon.

However, along the time, the fields and wineries of this region have suffered a big change leading to a major increase in wine quality and a more continuous production.
